Welcome Back! Today, we’ll be discussing the gospel of John and looking at what Jesus said to the religious leaders when they completely missed Him.

So let’s dive in.

John 5:31-46

If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid. There is another who testifies about Me, and I know that His testimony about Me is valid. You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. Even though I do not accept human testimony, I say these things so that you may be saved. John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light. But I have testimony more substantial than that of John. For the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works I am doing—testify about Me that the Father has sent Me. And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. 

You have never heard His voice nor seen His form, nor does His word abide in you, because you do not believe the One He sent. You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life. I do not accept glory from men, but I know you, that you do not have the love of God within you. I have come in My Father’s name, and you have not received Me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe if you accept glory from one another, yet do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, in whom you have put your hope. If you had believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”

My Thoughts 

There’s an old saying; “He missed the boat.” In other words this person would have failed to take full advantage of an opportunity given to him. And the only thing the religious leaders of Jesus’ day missed…was the boat! They had memorized the whole Bible in their pursuit to know God and when He came up and tapped them on the shoulder they dismissed Him as just another rabble rouser in the crowd. 

You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life. (John 5:39-40)

Religion has a sneaky way of doing this to us. We get all caught up in the practice and forget the Person. We concentrate on the method and miss the Master. We focus on the kingdom and lose sight of the King. Don’t get me wrong, the “what and how” are essential but not at the cost of losing the “Who.” Jesus!

The religious leaders had done exactly that and I think we can see a bit of this in our own lives if we’re honest. So how does one keep from turning their devotion into a dumpster fire? By constant reminder that our purpose is to serve and glorify God through Jesus His Son. It is our relationship with Him that drives the train on everything we think, say, or do. The Apostle Paul said it well;

For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. (1 Corinthians 2:2)

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

So today I’m reminding you and myself, let’s rightly align ourselves with the King. 

My Story

I was listening to a podcast the other day from a brilliant and well known theologian. And as he waxed eloquent, I found myself getting more and more anxious for him. Something was missing. Something important. It was Jesus. He mentioned “the Lord” in passing, almost as an obligatory appendage so he could give credit to what he was preaching. I think this is very dangerous not only for the preacher but for the people he’s leading.

I have documented several times how my mentor confronted me on my failure to make Jesus the focus of my life and ministry. (Click here for that story.) Since that day I have been making a concerted effort to point to Jesus. When I’m speaking, I’m consciously asking myself, “Am I bringing this back to Jesus or am I just talking about “religious stuff?” There are times when I finish writing something and go back and literally count the number of times I mentioned Jesus by name to check my heart. When someone asks me a question, I try to discipline myself and ask them, “How would Jesus answer this?” or “What did Jesus say or do to answer this question?”

But notice I called it a discipline. I found this is a real and exercised discipline to focus my thoughts and communication on Jesus. I’ve found this to be true for a few reasons;

• The enemy hates the name of Jesus and would try to persuade us to use any other name instead
• It takes intentionality. We must purpose in our hearts to put Jesus front and center
• We are ashamed of appearing to be overly spiritual
• We don’t hang out with people that make Jesus the focus of their lives

If there were only one thing I could talk about for the rest of my life, focusing on Jesus would be the topic. Let’s not miss the Boat!

Our Action Plan

What can we do to maintain a focus on the person of Christ? Here’s some ideas;

• List some other reasons why people may lose their focus on Jesus
• Count the number of times the name of Jesus is mentioned in your discipleship conversations
• Watch this video with the people you are discipling (The Colossians 1 Exercise)

As we live the Christian life let’s remember Jesus Christ is at the center of all we are.

¡Bienvenido! Hoy, hablaremos del evangelio de Juan y veremos lo que Jesús les dijo a los líderes religiosos cuando lo extrañaron por completo.

El Evangelio – Juan 5:31-46

Si yo doy testimonio acerca de mí mismo, mi testimonio no es verdadero.  Otro es el que da testimonio acerca de mí, y sé que el testimonio que da de mí es verdadero.  Vosotros enviasteis mensajeros a Juan, y él dio testimonio de la verdad. Pero yo no recibo testimonio de hombre alguno; mas digo esto, para que vosotros seáis salvos. Él era antorcha que ardía y alumbraba; y vosotros quisisteis regocijaros por un tiempo en su luz.  Mas yo tengo mayor testimonio que el de Juan; porque las obras que el Padre me dio para que cumpliese, las mismas obras que yo hago, dan testimonio de mí, que el Padre me ha enviado.  También el Padre que me envió ha dado testimonio de mí. 

Nunca habéis oído su voz, ni habéis visto su aspecto, ni tenéis su palabra morando en vosotros; porque a quien él envió, vosotros no creéis.  Escudriñan las Escrituras; porque a vosotros os parece que en ellas tenéis la vida eterna; y ellas son las que dan testimonio de mí; y no queréis venir a mí para que tengáis vida.  Gloria de los hombres no recibo.  Mas yo os conozco, que no tenéis amor de Dios en vosotros.  Yo he venido en nombre de mi Padre, y no me recibís; si otro viniere en su propio nombre, a ese recibiréis.  ¿Cómo podéis vosotros creer, pues recibís gloria los unos de los otros, y no buscáis la gloria que viene del Dios único?  No penséis que yo voy a acusaros delante del Padre; hay quien os acusa, Moisés, en quien tenéis vuestra esperanza.  Porque si creyeseis a Moisés, me creeríais a mí, porque de mí escribió él.

Mis Pensamientos

Hay un viejo dicho; “Se perdió el barco”. En otras palabras, esta persona no habría aprovechado al máximo una oportunidad que se le había dado. Y lo único que los líderes religiosos de la época de Jesús pasaron por alto… ¡Era el barco! Habían memorizado toda la Biblia en su búsqueda por conocer a Dios, y cuando Él se acercó y les tocó el hombro, lo descartaron como si fuera otro agitador de la multitud.

Estudias detenidamente las Escrituras porque presumes que por ellas posees la vida eterna. Estas son las mismas palabras que testifican de Mí, sin embargo, os negáis a venir a Mí para tener vida. (Juan 5:39-40.)

La religión tiene una forma astuta de hacernos esto. Nos quedamos atrapados en la práctica y nos olvidamos de la Persona. Nos concentramos en el método y echamos de menos al Maestro. Nos centramos en el reino y perdemos de vista al Rey. No me malinterpreten, “el qué y el cómo” son esenciales, pero no a costa de perder el “quién”. ¡Jesús!

Los líderes religiosos habían hecho exactamente eso y creo que podemos ver un poco de esto en nuestras propias vidas si somos honestos. Entonces, ¿cómo puede uno evitar convertir su devoción en un incendio en un contenedor de basura? Recordando constantemente que nuestro propósito es servir y glorificar a Dios a través de Jesús, Su Hijo. Es nuestra relación con Él la que impulsa todo lo que pensamos, decimos o hacemos. El apóstol Pablo lo dijo bien:

Porque me propuse no conocer entre vosotros nada sino a Jesucristo, y a éste crucificado. (1 Corintios 2:2.)

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Así que hoy les recuerdo a ustedes y a mí mismo, alineémonos correctamente con el Rey.

Mi Historia

El otro día estaba escuchando un podcast de un teólogo brillante y muy conocido. Y a medida que se volvía elocuente, me encontré cada vez más ansioso por él. Faltaba algo. Algo importante. Era Jesús. Mencionó al “Señor” de pasada, casi como un apéndice obligatorio para poder dar crédito a lo que estaba predicando. Creo que esto es muy peligroso, no solo para el predicador, sino para las personas a las que dirige.

He documentado varias veces cómo mi mentor me confrontó por mi fracaso en hacer de Jesús el centro de mi vida y ministerio. Desde ese día he estado haciendo un esfuerzo concertado para señalar a Jesús. Cuando hablo, me pregunto conscientemente: “¿Estoy trayendo esto de vuelta a Jesús o solo estoy hablando de “cosas religiosas”? Hay momentos en los que termino de escribir algo y vuelvo atrás y, literalmente, cuento el número de veces que mencioné a Jesús por su nombre para revisar mi corazón. Cuando alguien me hace una pregunta, trato de disciplinarme y preguntarle: “¿Cómo respondería Jesús a esto?” o “¿Qué dijo o hizo Jesús para responder a esta pregunta?”.

Pero fíjense, yo llamé a esto, una disciplina. Descubrí que esta es una disciplina real y ejercitada para enfocar mis pensamientos y comunicación en Jesús. He descubierto que esto es cierto por varias razones;

-El enemigo odia el nombre de Jesús y trataría de persuadirnos para que usemos cualquier otro nombre en su lugar

-Se necesita intencionalidad. Debemos proponernos en nuestros corazones poner a Jesús al frente y al centro

– Nos avergonzamos de parecer demasiado espirituales

– No salimos con personas que hacen de Jesús el centro de sus vidas

Si solo hubiera una cosa de la que pudiera hablar por el resto de mi vida, el tema sería enfocarme en Jesús. ¡No perdamos el barco!

¿Qué podemos hacer para mantener un enfoque en la persona de Cristo? Aquí hay algunas ideas:

–       Haga una lista de algunas otras razones por las que las personas pueden perder su enfoque en Jesús

–       Cuente el número de veces que se menciona el nombre de Jesús en sus conversaciones de discipulado

–       Mire este video con las personas a las que está discipulando  

Al vivir la vida cristiana, recordemos que Jesucristo está en el centro de todo lo que somos.

The Gospel – John 5:24-30

Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life. Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself. And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 

My Thoughts 

I was reading a book by a Christian author and he was trying on the ill fitting clothes of equality and equity as he described how to share the gospel. He was railing against the fact that we as Christians see people in two different camps; those that are in and those who are out. He was trying to build a case for everyone to be “in.” This is called Universalism, where all roads lead to heaven and Jesus Christ paved the way no matter what a person’s belief system is. Basically, the author of this book neutered the gospel of grace and truth. A false gospel. In contrast I like to say, “All roads do lead to heaven. It’s just a matter of how long you get to stay there.” Jesus makes it clear that in the resurrection we will all stand before Him. For the believer it will mean eternal life with Him. And for those who trusted in themselves for salvation? It will be judgment and hell, eternal separation from God.

The Author of the good news sees a stark distinction between those who embrace Him as Lord and Savior and those who do not. And He directly states that there are two different eternal realities that await those who are in the kingdom of light and those who are in the kingdom of darkness. As much as we don’t want to believe that a loving God could ever send anyone to an eternity of torment, Jesus is clear that a just God has every right to do so.  Hell is a very real place for very real people. (Matthew 25, Luke 16)

We are living in an age where there is a great cry for equality and equity. Everyone gets a trophy. I’m not opposed to compassion on those who are less fortunate and giving to those who want to make good on the generosity shown to them and make their situation better. I’m all for that kind of responsible benevolence. But we dare not let the world’s twisted sense of fairness determine our doctrine. There are divine truths and principles at play. We may not understand or even agree with them but in the end it is only God who is omniscient. He knows what He’s doing and our response should be to trust a perfectly loving and just God.

My Story

I’ve been reading Romans in my morning prayer times lately and it reminds me that the “Bad News” is part of the “Good News.”

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

This is always challenging to me as I share the gospel with others because I just want to share the “good stuff.” I’ve had to make an intentional effort to be like Jesus and give the warning as well as the wonderful promise of eternal life. So when I share the gospel, usually in the middle of my short testimony, I try to include these three elements; Sin, Repentance, and Hell. I express these concepts in terms the hearer will understand and stay away from theological words and Christian jargon. Here’s basically what I share;

When I was in High School I was doing a lot of stupid stuff and always getting into trouble. So I thought I’d join the Army and they’d fix me. Well, I did and they didn’t. I did even worse things and was still getting in a lot of trouble.  I knew if I were to die during that time I would have gone straight to Hell. A Special Forces Sergeant noticed I was like a rocket without a guidance system and took me under his wing and started mentoring me. One day, I guess he had had enough, he said, “Wood, you are out of control! Not even the Army can control you.” Then he said something I never expected to come out of a Green Beret’s mouth; “God loves you!” I stood there in shock! What did he just say? He continued; “He loves us so much that He sent His Son Jesus down to the Earth and He lived a perfect life. Then Jesus willingly died on a cross for every messed up thing you’ve ever done and He was buried in a grave. But the good news is He rose again three days later proving that He’s the Boss. You need to ask for His forgiveness and make Him your Boss, your King.” When I surrendered my life to Jesus and made Him the King of my life my life radically changed. He fixed me. Although I’m not perfect and still mess up, I know that He has forgiven me. Living life the way He wants me to is so much better than my way. How about you? Have you ever asked God for forgiveness and made Jesus your King?

Did you hear the bad news in the good news? Did you hear sin, the need to repent, and Hell? Did you hear God’s love, His Son’s sacrifice, and grace? As we look at Jesus’ method of sharing the gospel He brings both the bad and the good news.

Our Action Plan

Now it’s time to put these things into action. Here’s some suggestions;

• Do a Bible study with those you are discipling on how John the Baptist shared the gospel in Luke 3:1-18 (So with many other exhortations he preached the gospel to the people. v18)
• Do a Bible study with those you are discipling on what Jesus said about Hell
• Practice sharing the gospel with those you are discipling and include sin, repentance, and Hell

It’s hard for most of us to be confrontational with the gospel and yet we have clear Biblical examples of those who were. If we are going to preach the gospel like Jesus, we need to include the bad news with the good.

¡Bienvenido! Hoy, combinaremos el Evangelio de Juan para ver cómo Jesús presentó las malas noticias con las buenas noticias.

De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que oye mi palabra, y cree al que me envió, tiene vida eterna; y no vendrá a condenación, mas ha pasado de muerte a vida.  De cierto, de cierto os digo: Viene la hora, y ahora es, cuando los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios; y los que la oyeren vivirán.  Porque como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así también ha dado al Hijo el tener vida en sí mismo; y también le dio autoridad de hacer juicio, por cuanto es el Hijo del Hombre.  No os maravilléis de esto; porque vendrá hora cuando todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz; y los que hicieron lo bueno, saldrán a resurrección de vida; mas los que hicieron lo malo, a resurrección de condenación. No puedo yo hacer nada por mí mismo; según oigo, así juzgo; y mi juicio es justo, porque no busco mi voluntad, sino la voluntad del que me envió, la del Padre.

Mis Pensamientos

Estaba leyendo un libro de un autor cristiano y él se estaba probando la ropa mal ajustada de la igualdad y la equidad mientras describía cómo compartir el evangelio. Estaba despotricando contra el hecho de que nosotros, como cristianos, vemos a las personas en dos campos diferentes; los que están dentro y los que están fuera. Estaba tratando de construir un caso para que todos estuvieran “dentro”. A esto se le llama Universalismo, donde todos los caminos conducen al cielo y Jesucristo allanó el camino sin importar cuál es el sistema de creencias de una persona. Básicamente, el autor de este libro castró el evangelio de la gracia y la verdad. Un falso evangelio. En contraste, me gusta decir: “Todos los caminos conducen al cielo. Es solo una cuestión de cuánto tiempo puedes quedarte allí”. Jesús deja claro que en la resurrección todos estaremos delante de Él. Para el creyente significará la vida eterna con Él. ¿Y para los que confiaban en sí mismos para la salvación? Será el juicio y el infierno, la separación eterna de Dios.

El Autor de las buenas nuevas ve una clara distinción entre aquellos que abrazan a Jesús como Señor y Salvador y aquellos que no lo hacen. Y Él afirma directamente que hay dos realidades eternas diferentes que esperan a los que están en el reino de la luz y a los que están en el reino de las tinieblas. Por mucho que no queramos creer que un Dios amoroso pueda enviar a alguien a una eternidad de tormento, Jesús tiene claro que un Dios justo tiene todo el derecho de hacerlo.  El infierno es un lugar muy real para personas muy reales. (Mateo 25, Lucas 16)

Vivimos en una época en la que hay un gran clamor por la igualdad y la equidad. Todos reciben un trofeo. No me opongo a la compasión por los menos afortunados y a la generosidad con los que quieren compensar la generosidad que se les ha mostrado y mejorar su situación. Estoy a favor de ese tipo de benevolencia responsable. Pero no nos atrevemos a permitir que el retorcido sentido de la justicia del mundo determine nuestra doctrina. Hay verdades y principios divinos en juego. Puede que no los entendamos o incluso no estemos de acuerdo con ellos, pero al final es solo Dios quien es omnisciente. Él sabe lo que está haciendo y nuestra respuesta debe ser confiar en un Dios perfectamente amoroso y justo.

Mi Historia

Últimamente he estado leyendo Romanos en mis horas de oración matutina y me recuerda que las “Malas Noticias” son parte de las “Buenas Nuevas”.

Por cuanto todos pecaron y están destituidos de la gloria de Dios (Romanos 3:23)

Porque la paga del pecado es muerte, pero la dádiva de Dios es vida eterna en Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro. (Romanos 6:23.)

Esto siempre es un desafío para mí, ya que comparto el evangelio con los demás porque solo quiero compartir las “cosas buenas”. He tenido que hacer un esfuerzo intencional para ser como Jesús y dar la advertencia, así como la maravillosa promesa de la vida eterna. Así que cuando comparto el Evangelio, por lo general en medio de mi breve testimonio, trato de incluir estos tres elementos; El pecado, el arrepentimiento y el infierno. Expreso estos conceptos en términos que el oyente entenderá y se mantendrá alejado de las palabras teológicas y la jerga cristiana. Lo que sigue es básicamente lo que comparto:

Cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria, hacía muchas cosas estúpidas y siempre me metía en problemas. Así que pensé en unirme al Ejército y que allí me arreglaría. Bueno, yo ingresé y esto no me arregló. Hice cosas aún peores y todavía me estaba metiendo en muchos problemas.  Sabía que si iba a morir durante ese tiempo, iría directamente al infierno. Un sargento de las Fuerzas Especiales se dio cuenta de que yo era como un cohete sin un sistema de guía y me tomó bajo su ala y comenzó a asesorarme. Un día, supongo que ya había tenido suficiente, y me dijo: “¡Wood, estás fuera de control! Ni siquiera el Ejército puede controlarte”. Luego dijo algo que nunca esperé que saliera de la boca de un Boina Verde; “¡Dios te ama!” ¡Me quedé allí en estado de shock! ¿Qué acaba de decir? Y continuó; “Él nos ama tanto que envió a su Hijo Jesús a la Tierra y vivió una vida perfecta. Entonces Jesús murió voluntariamente en una cruz por cada cosa mala que Ud. haya hecho y Él fue enterrado en una tumba. Pero la buena noticia es que resucitó tres días después, demostrando que Él es el Jefe. Necesitas pedirle perdón y convertirlo en tu Jefe, en tu Rey”. Cuando entregué mi vida a Jesús y lo hice el Rey de mi vida, mi vida cambió radicalmente. Él me arregló. Aunque no soy perfecto y sigo metiendo la pata, sé que Él me ha perdonado. Vivir la vida de la manera que Él quiere que yo sea es mucho mejor que mi manera. ¿Y tú? ¿Alguna vez le has pedido perdón a Dios y has hecho a Jesús tu Rey?

¿Escuchaste las malas noticias en las buenas noticias? ¿Escuchaste el pecado, la necesidad de arrepentirse y el infierno? ¿Escuchaste el amor de Dios, el sacrificio y la gracia de Su Hijo? Al observar el método de Jesús para compartir el evangelio, Él trae tanto las malas como las buenas noticias.

Nuestro Plan de Acción

Ahora es el momento de poner estas cosas en acción. Aquí hay algunas sugerencias;

–       Haz un estudio bíblico con las personas a las que estás discipulando sobre cómo Juan el Bautista compartió el evangelio en Lucas 3:1-18 (Así que con muchas otras exhortaciones, predicó el evangelio a la gente. v18)

–       Haz un estudio bíblico con aquellos a quienes estás discipulando sobre lo que Jesús dijo sobre el infierno

–       Practica compartir el evangelio con aquellos a quienes estás discipulando e incluye el pecado, el arrepentimiento y el infierno

Es difícil para la mayoría de nosotros confrontar con el evangelio y, sin embargo, tenemos claros ejemplos bíblicos de aquellos que sí lo eran. Si vamos a predicar el evangelio como Jesús, necesitamos incluir las malas noticias con las buenas.

John 5:16-23

Now because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews began to persecute Him. But Jesus answered them, “To this very day My Father is at His work, and I too am working.” Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. 

So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does. The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes. Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 

My Thoughts 

Jesus was in perfect alignment with the Father. 

 “The Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does.”

If there is one area we can and need to be like Jesus, it’s this one; Alignment. Sometimes I get push back from people who say we can’t be like Jesus because He is God. But this ignores dozens of Scriptural admonitions to be like Jesus. 

We need to remember that Jesus was not only fully God but also fully human. He came as an example of what it looks like to be the image of God and in complete alignment with the Father. I believe Jesus chose to limit His divinity intentionally while He fulfilled His earthly ministry, in order to be a legitimate example for us. (Philippians 2:5-8)  If Jesus used His deity to perform miracles or any other extraordinary work, it would be like telling us to imitate Superman without any of his super powers. That’s a bit far-fetched and an unfair request.

So how did Jesus pull off all those miracles if He didn’t tap into His deity? By abiding in the Father. Remember when the disciples were trying to cast out a demon and couldn’t. Jesus casts out the demon and the disciples ask, “Why couldn’t we do it?” Jesus responds by reproving their lack of faith and saying, “This kind only comes out by prayer and fasting.” So apparently Jesus had the faith and was fasted and prayed up enough to cast out the evil spirit with ease. Notice Jesus did not attribute His success to His divine powers but to being properly related to the Father. He was being a perfect model of what it looks like to be aligned with God. 

We actually pray this every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer.

“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Jesus showed us what that looks like. He aligned Himself with the Father’s will and exhibited the kingdom coming to earth in the presence of man. As we pursue the imitation of Christ and align ourselves with the Father, this is one sure fire way to bring glory to Him and experience His kingdom.

My Story

In the last few years I’ve noticed that Jesus did most of His discipling in the harvest. In other words, Jesus took the 12 disciples and modeled for them what it looked like to make disciples among the lost. Sure, Jesus has His boat and mountain top time with the guys. But as you look at His ministry closely, a lot of time is spent discipling the Twelve ministering in public. I asked myself, “Do I do most of my discipleship in the harvest or in some private place sealed off from the public?” That struck me as a critical area I needed to align myself with His ministry. 

I decided that 50% of the time our church met we would meet in public for six months. We started meeting in a McDonalds and invited the people there to join us in church. If we did catch a fish or two, our time in the Word would have an evangelistic emphasis. We’ve met in other fast food places, the food court in a mall, and even knocked on doors in neighborhoods in order to be more aligned with Jesus’ ministry. 

This is just one example of alignment. I’ve tried to emulate Jesus’ time in the Word and prayer, love for people, focused mentoring on a few, using stories to communicate Biblical truths, etc… If my goal is to be like Jesus, I need to align myself with Him as He did with the Father. 

Our Action Plan

Now it’s your turn. What will you do to help the folks you’re discipling to align themselves with Jesus? Here’s a few ideas.

• Do a Bible study together on how Jesus aligned Himself with the Father
• Make a list of five areas that you need to work on in alignment
• Cast vision for those you are mentoring on what alignment with Jesus looks like

As we pursue the imitation of Christ, let’s look at His alignment with the Father as one of our chief goals in being like Him.

¡Bienvenido! Hoy, combinaremos el Evangelio de Juan para descubrir uno de nuestros principales objetivos en el discipulado.

Juan 5:16-23

Y por esta causa los judíos perseguían a Jesús, y procuraban matarle, porque hacía estas cosas en el día de reposo. Y Jesús les respondió: Mi Padre hasta ahora trabaja, y yo trabajo.  Por esto los judíos aún más procuraban matarle, porque no solo quebrantaba el día de reposo, sino que también decía que Dios era su propio Padre, haciéndose igual a Dios.

Respondió entonces Jesús, y les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: No puede el Hijo hacer nada por sí mismo, sino lo que ve hacer al Padre; porque todo lo que el Padre hace, también lo hace el Hijo igualmente.  Porque el Padre ama al Hijo, y le muestra todas las cosas que él hace; y mayores obras que estas le mostrará, de modo que vosotros os maravilléis.  Porque como el Padre levanta a los muertos, y les da vida, así también el Hijo a los que quiere da vida.  Porque el Padre a nadie juzga, sino que todo el juicio dio al Hijo, para que todos honren al Hijo como honran al Padre. El que no honra al Hijo, no honra al Padre que le envió.

Mis Pensamientos

Jesús estaba en perfecta alineación con el Padre.

“El Hijo no puede hacer nada por sí mismo, a menos que vea al Padre haciéndolo. Porque todo lo que hace el Padre, también lo hace el Hijo”.

Si hay un área en la que podemos y necesitamos ser como Jesús, es esta: Alineación. A veces me rechazan personas que dicen que no podemos ser como Jesús porque Él es Dios. Pero esto ignora docenas de advertencias bíblicas para ser como Jesús.

Necesitamos recordar que Jesús no solo era completamente Dios, sino también completamente humano. Vino como un ejemplo de lo que es ser la imagen de Dios y estar en completa alineación con el Padre. Creo que Jesús eligió limitar Su divinidad intencionalmente mientras cumplía Su ministerio terrenal, con el fin de ser un ejemplo legítimo para nosotros. (Filipenses 2:5-8.)  Si Jesús usó su deidad para realizar milagros o cualquier otra obra extraordinaria, sería como decirnos que imitemos a Superman sin ninguno de sus superpoderes. Eso es un poco exagerado y una solicitud injusta.

Entonces, ¿cómo logró Jesús todos esos milagros si no aprovechó su deidad? Permaneciendo en el Padre. Recuerden cuando los discípulos estaban tratando de expulsar a un demonio y no podían. Jesús expulsa al demonio y los discípulos preguntan: “¿Por qué no pudimos hacerlo nosotros?” Jesús responde reprendiendo su falta de fe y diciendo: “Este género solo sale por la oración y el ayuno”. Así que, aparentemente, Jesús tenía la fe y ayunó y oró lo suficiente como para expulsar al espíritu maligno con facilidad. Nótese que Jesús no atribuyó su éxito a sus poderes divinos, sino a relacionarse correctamente con el Padre. Él estaba siendo un modelo perfecto de lo que es estar alineado con Dios.

De hecho, oramos esto cada vez que oramos el Padre Nuestro.

“Venga tu reino, hágase tu voluntad, así en la tierra como en el cielo”.

Jesús nos mostró cómo se hace. Se alineó con la voluntad del Padre y exhibió la venida del reino a la tierra en la presencia del hombre. A medida que buscamos la imitación de Cristo y nos alineamos con el Padre, esta es una manera segura de darle gloria a Él y experimentar Su reino.

Mi Historia

En los últimos años me he dado cuenta de que Jesús hizo la mayor parte de su discipulado dentro de la cosecha. En otras palabras, Jesús tomó a los 12 discípulos y les modeló lo que sería hacer discípulos entre los perdidos. Claro, Jesús tuvo su tiempo en el barco con los discípulos y experiencia de “monte alto”. Pero cuando se mira Su ministerio de cerca, se pasa mucho tiempo discipulando a los Doce ministrando en público. Me pregunté: “¿Hago la mayor parte de mi discipulado dentro de la cosecha en algún lugar público o en privado aislado del público?” Eso me pareció un área crítica que necesitaba para alinearme con Su ministerio.

Decidí que el 50% de las veces que nuestra iglesia se reunía nos reuniríamos en público durante seis meses. Comenzamos a reunirnos en un McDonalds e invitamos a la gente de allí a unirse a nosotros en iglesia. Si pescamos un pez o dos, nuestro tiempo en la Palabra tendría un énfasis evangelístico. Nos hemos encontrado en otros lugares de comida rápida, en el patio de comidas de un centro comercial, e incluso hemos tocado puertas en los vecindarios para estar más alineados con el ministerio de Jesús.

Este es solo un ejemplo de alineación. He tratado de emular el tiempo de Jesús en la Palabra y la oración, el amor por las personas, la mentoría enfocada en unos pocos, el uso de historias para comunicar verdades bíblicas, etc. Si mi meta es ser como Jesús, necesito alinearme con Él como Él lo hizo con el Padre.

-Hagan juntos un estudio bíblico sobre cómo Jesús se alineó con el Padre

-Haz una lista de cinco áreas en las que necesitas trabajar en esta alineación

-Proyecta una visión para aquellos a los que estás asesorando sobre cómo se ve la alineación con Jesús

A medida que buscamos imitar a Cristo, veamos Su alineación con el Padre como una de nuestras principales metas para ser como Él.
