Welcome Back! Today, we’ll be combining the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke to see how Jesus managed to stay on target in the midst of a very busy lifestyle.
So let’s dive in.
Matthew 4:23–25, Mark 1:35–39, Luke 4:42–44
Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray. At daybreak, Simon, his companions, and the crowds were looking for Him. When they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!” But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach the good news of the kingdom of God there as well, because that is why I have come and was sent.” But the people tried to keep Him from leaving.
So He went throughout Galilee and Judea, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and driving out demons and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about Him spread all over Syria, and people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering acute pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed—and He healed them. The large crowds that followed Him came from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
My Thoughts
One of my favorite parts of the first movie, Star Wars: A New Hope, was when the bombers were attacking the Death Star. The mission was to fly their ships through a narrow corridor and drop a bomb into a small ventilation duct. The bombers were getting picked off one by one by the Tie Fighters but the commander, staying calm, cool, and collective, was urging his pilots, “Stay on target, stay on target.” Anytime things get stressful or hectic, the commander’s calm admonition rings in my ears. And anytime I read this story about Jesus, the same reframe comes to mind. Stay on target, stay on target.
Imagine yourself in Jesus’ sandals for a minute. The last 2-3 days must have been incredibly busy; teaching by the sea, recruiting disciples, preaching in the synagogue, casting out demons and healing people lined up at your door late into the night. I might have been tempted to sleep in the next morning but not Jesus. He was up before the crack of dawn communing with the Father. And just at the point where everyone wants Him to jump right back on the hamster wheel, He leaves the mega-church He just started and heads out of town.
You can just hear someone saying, “Wait Jesus! You don’t know what a good thing You got going on here. Look at all these people! You are the best show in town. And besides, there’s still people who need to be delivered and healed. We could build a bigger synagogue. We could set a base of operations and send others out with the message. You’re making a big mistake, think about Your reputation.”
Nope. He had spent time with the Father and had His marching orders. He knew His calling. His identity and purpose were clear.
But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach the good news of the kingdom of God there as well, because that is why I have come and was sent.”
Jesus stayed on target and the time He spent with the Father early in the morning was a huge factor in how He was able to do it. If you don’t get anything from my blog posts, get this one thing; Spend time with the Father daily in His Word and prayer seeking to become more like His Son, Jesus. That is the most important piece of advice I could ever give you. This will certainly help you stay on target.
My Story
When I was a brand new disciple I was taught the discipline of spending time with Jesus in prayer and the Word of God. It was easy enough on weekends when I could sleep in and get up at a leisurely hour, grab a cup of coffee, and be with the Master. The week days were another story. Most mornings I was out the door driving to work at 6:00. That meant getting up at 5:00 to get in a good 20 minute Quiet Time and even then I was hustling. But I was in the Army and if you don’t like a predictable routine, the soldier’s life is for you!
I remember being on a field exercise in the winter. We had to be up and in our fighting positions 30 minutes before dawn. I was a squad leader so that meant getting up even earlier. When my watch beeped at 4:00 there was a thick layer of frost on my sleeping bag. I had a choice, stay in my nice warm bedroll or get up and spend time with Jesus. I chose the latter and I reached into my frozen rucksack, found my Bible and flashlight, and pulled them back into my now semi-warm sleeping bag and began my morning devotions. On a side note; We used flashlights with red lenses to preserve our night vision. If you’re reading a red letter edition under a red lens, you’ll notice significant gaps in the Gospels. It took me a minute to figure out what was going on there. 🙂
There have been a few defining moments in my journey of the discipline of daily time with Jesus to becoming a daily delight and that was one of them. I had to fight every urge and excuse not to spend a little time in prayer and the Word in very difficult circumstances. It’s not good enough to know this is a high priority but we have to actually practice this high priority. These tests will inevitably come but if we want to be like Jesus and stay on target and help others do the same, we are going to have to pass the test. Be a good soldier teaching others to be good soldiers. Be an example of staying on target by getting time with God every day and teaching others to follow your lead!
Our Action Plan
Now it’s time to be “Doers” of the Word, not merely “Hearers.” What are some ways we can ensure that the people we are discipling get their daily direction from God and stay on target. Here’s some ideas;
- Plan some time early in the morning to get together and model an intentional time with Jesus
- Help disciples with a simple way to get started with a daily devotional life. See this video: Training a Disciple to Spend Time with Jesus
- When you get together ask them how their prayer time is going and what they’re getting out of the Word
Let’s face it, life can be very distracting. If we don’t train disciples to spend intentional time with Jesus, they’ll end up aiming at nothing. And you know what they say, “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it everytime.” Train disciples on how to stay on target by spending time with the Master.

Mis Pensamientos
Una de mis partes favoritas de la primera película, La Guerra de las Galaxias: Una Nueva Esperanza, fue cuando los terroristas estaban atacando la Estrella Muerta. La misión consistía en volar sus naves a través de un estrecho corredor y dejar caer una bomba en un pequeño conducto de ventilación. Los bombarderos estaban siendo eliminados uno por uno por los “Cazadores Estelares”, pero el comandante, manteniendo la calma, la calma y la seriedad, instaba a sus pilotos: “Manténganse en el objetivo, permanezcan en el objetivo”. Cada vez que las cosas se ponen estresantes o agitadas, la tranquila advertencia del comandante resuena en mis oídos. Y cada vez que leo esta historia sobre Jesús, me viene a la mente el mismo replanteamiento. Mantente en el objetivo, mantente en el objetivo.
Imagínate a ti mismo en las sandalias de Jesús por un minuto. Los últimos 2-3 días deben haber sido increíblemente ocupados; Enseñando junto al mar, reclutando discípulos, predicando en la sinagoga, expulsando demonios y sanando a las personas alineadas en tu puerta hasta altas horas de la noche. Podría haber sido tentado a dormir a la mañana siguiente, pero no Jesús. Se levantó antes del amanecer y estaba en comunión con el Padre. Y justo en el momento en que todos quieren que vuelva a subirse a la rueda del hámster, Él deja la mega-iglesia que acaba de comenzar y se va de la ciudad.
Puedes escuchar a alguien decir: “¡Espera, Jesús! No sabes lo bueno que tienes aquí. ¡Mira a toda esta gente! Eres el mejor espectáculo de la ciudad. Y además, todavía hay personas que necesitan ser liberadas y sanadas. Podríamos construir una sinagoga más grande. Podríamos establecer una base de operaciones y enviar a otros con el mensaje. Estás cometiendo un gran error, piensa en tu reputación”.
No. Había pasado tiempo con el Padre y tenía Sus órdenes de marcha. Él conocía Su llamado. Su identidad y propósito eran claros.
Pero Jesús le respondió: “Vayamos a las ciudades vecinas para que también allí predique el evangelio del reino de Dios, porque para eso he venido y he sido enviado”.
Jesús se mantuvo en el objetivo y el tiempo que pasó con el Padre temprano en la mañana fue un factor muy importante en cómo pudo hacerlo. Si no obtienes nada de las publicaciones de mi blog, obtén esta cosa; Pasa tiempo con el Padre diariamente en Su Palabra y oración, buscando llegar a ser más como Su Hijo, Jesús. Ese es el consejo más importante que podría darte. Esto sin duda te ayudará a mantenerte en el objetivo.
Mi Historia
Cuando era un nuevo discípulo, me enseñaron la disciplina de pasar tiempo con Jesús en oración y en la Palabra de Dios. Era bastante fácil los fines de semana cuando podía dormir hasta tarde y levantarme a una hora tranquila, tomar una taza de café y estar con el Maestro. Los días de semana eran otra historia. La mayoría de las mañanas salía en mi carro hacia el trabajo a las 6:00. Eso significaba levantarme a las 5:00 para tener un buen tiempo de silencio de 20 minutos e incluso entonces estaba apurado. Pero yo estuve en el Ejército y si no te gusta una rutina predecible, ¡la vida de soldado es para ti!
Recuerdo estar en una práctica de combate en el invierno. Teníamos que estar despiertos y en nuestras posiciones de combate 30 minutos antes del amanecer. Yo era un líder de escuadrón, así que eso significaba levantarme incluso más temprano. Cuando mi reloj sonó a las 4:00, había una gruesa capa de escarcha en mi saco de dormir. Tenía una opción, quedarme en mi agradable y cálida colchoneta o levantarme y pasar tiempo con Jesús. Elegí lo último y metí la mano en mi mochila congelada, encontré mi Biblia y mi linterna, y los volví a meter en mi saco de dormir, ahora semi-cálido, y comencé mis devocionales matutinos. En una nota al margen; usamos linternas con lentes rojos para preservar nuestra visión nocturna. Si estás leyendo una edición de letras rojas bajo una lente roja, notarás lagunas significativas en los Evangelios. Tardé un minuto en darme cuenta de lo que estaba pasando allí. 🙂
Ha habido algunos momentos decisivos en mi viaje de la disciplina del tiempo diario con Jesús para convertirme en un deleite diario y ese fue uno de ellos. Tuve que luchar contra todos los impulsos y excusas para no dedicar un poco de tiempo a la oración y a la Palabra en circunstancias muy difíciles. No es suficiente saber que esto es una alta prioridad, pero tenemos que practicarla realmente. Estas pruebas vendrán inevitablemente, pero si queremos ser como Jesús y mantenernos en el objetivo y ayudar a otros a hacer lo mismo, vamos a tener que pasar la prueba. Sé un buen soldado enseñando a otros a ser buenos soldados. ¡Sé un ejemplo de mantenerte en el objetivo al pasar tiempo con Dios todos los días y enseñar a otros a seguir tu ejemplo!
Nuestro Plan de Acción
Ahora es el momento de ser “Hacedores” de la Palabra, no meramente “Oyentes”. ¿Cuáles son algunas maneras en que podemos asegurarnos de que las personas a las que estamos discipulando obtengan su dirección diaria de Dios y se mantengan en el objetivo? Aquí hay algunas ideas;
· Planifique un tiempo temprano en la mañana para reunirse y modelar un tiempo intencional con Jesús
· Ayude a los discípulos con una manera sencilla de comenzar con una vida devocional diaria. Vea este video: Entrenando a un discípulo para pasar tiempo con Jesús
· Cuando se reúnan, pregúnteles cómo va su tiempo de oración y qué están obteniendo de la Palabra.
Seamos realistas, la vida puede distraernos mucho. Si no entrenamos a los discípulos para que pasen tiempo intencionalmente con Jesús, terminarán sin aspirar a nada. Y ya sabes lo que dicen: “Si no apuntas a nada, siempre lo lograrás”. Entrene a los discípulos sobre cómo mantenerse en el objetivo pasando tiempo con el Maestro.
