Welcome Back! Today, we’ll be combining the Gospel of Luke to discover more about our identity and purpose.

Luke 1:26-33
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, who was of the descendants of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. The angel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was very perplexed at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!”
Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. Look, even Elizabeth, your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “I am the Lord’s servant.” “May it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.
My Thoughts
Hey friends, let’s dive into this powerful passage from Luke 1 and unpack some life-changing truths, shall we? I don’t know about you, but whenever I read Mary’s story, I’m struck by both her unique identity and clear sense of purpose straight from God Himself.
Can you imagine an angel showing up out of nowhere, calling you “favored one” and dropping a bombshell about being handpicked to mother the Messiah? Talk about some heavy duty identity and purpose! Yet in those few short verses, Mary receives crystal clear revelation about who she is and why she’s on this earth.
That’s something we all desperately need, isn’t it? In a world constantly screaming conflicting messages about our worth and purpose, it’s no wonder we’re perpetually confused about our identities. But get this – scripture tells us that like Mary, you and I are God’s favored children (Ephesians 1:5-6). Let that sink in for a second. The Creator of the universe looks at you with delight, showers you with grace, and says “You’re mine, beloved.” Wow.
But here’s the beautiful thing – our identity isn’t just some warm fuzzy feeling, it’s inextricably tied to our kingdom purpose. Just as Mary humbly responded “I am the Lord’s servant” (Luke 1:38), we too are called to leverage our new identities for God’s eternal mission. Christ frees us from aimless wandering and pours immense meaning into our lives as His ambassadors, disciples, light-bearers.
Jesus Himself is the perfect model – His very name means “God is salvation” and He is the Son of the King, ushering in an everlasting kingdom (Luke 1:31-33). That’s some serious identity and weighty purpose right there! And get this – the way we discover and walk in our callings is by fixing our eyes on Him, imitating the way He lived (1 John 2:6).
So let me ask you: Are you helping the ones you are discipling to fully embrace who they are in Christ and the beautiful purpose He’s entrusted to them? Or are they still searching, trying on different identities, feeling aimless and unsatisfied? It’s our job to cooperate with the Holy Spirit and be in alignment with the Scriptures as we help them take on the full meaning and expression of being a child of God and walking in a manner that will please Him.
My Story
A few years back, I completely ran out of gas. The wheels fell off. I was totally and completely burned out. One of the ways Jesus helped me crawl out of that pit of despair was by memorizing some Scripture on my identity and purpose and God’s identity and purpose. I just saturated myself, meditating on those verses, taking them to heart, and it lifted me out of that hole of disappointment, depression and disillusionment. It took some time and loving patience from Deb, but eventually, Jesus helped me get back on track with renewed identity and purpose.
Our Action Plan
So now it’s time to put this into action. Here’s some ideas;
- Have disciples memorize verses on God’s sovereignty, their identity, and their purpose
- When talking about these two, combine them together and try not to separate them
- Never pit Knowing, Being, or Doing against each other
It’s essential that we as disciple-makers help people get a hold of their identity and purpose in Christ. Let’s be sure to have a plan to help them do just that!

Mis Pensamientos
Hola amigos, vamos a sumergirnos en este poderoso pasaje de Lucas 1 y desenpacar algunas verdades que cambian la vida, ¿de acuerdo? No sé ustedes, pero cada vez que leo la historia de María, me sorprende tanto su identidad única como su claro sentido de propósito directamente de Dios mismo.
¿Te imaginas a un ángel apareciendo de la nada, llamándote “favorecida” y soltando como una bomba sobre haber sido elegida para ser la madre del Mesías? ¡Habla de una identidad y un propósito de trabajo pesado! Sin embargo, en esos pocos versículos cortos, María recibe una revelación clara como el agua sobre quién es y por qué está en esta tierra.
Eso es algo que todos necesitamos desesperadamente, ¿no es así? En un mundo que grita constantemente mensajes contradictorios sobre nuestro valor y propósito, no es de extrañar que estemos perpetuamente confundidos acerca de nuestras identidades. Pero entiendan esto: las Escrituras nos dicen que, al igual que María, tú y yo somos hijos predestinados por Dios (Efesios 1:5-6). Permítete asimilar esto por un segundo. El Creador del universo te mira con deleite, te colma de gracia y te dice: “Eres mío, mi amado”. Uau!
Pero aquí está lo hermoso: nuestra identidad no es solo un sentimiento cálido y difuso, sino que está inextricablemente ligada a nuestro propósito en el reino. Así como María respondió humildemente “Yo soy la sierva del Señor” (Lucas 1:38), nosotros también estamos llamados a aprovechar nuestras nuevas identidades para la misión eterna de Dios. Cristo nos libera de la vagabundeo sin rumbo y derrama un inmenso significado en nuestras vidas como Sus embajadores, discípulos, portadores de Su luz.
Jesús mismo es el modelo perfecto: su mismo nombre significa “Dios es salvación” y Él es el Hijo del Rey, que marca el comienzo de un reino eterno (Lucas 1:31-33). ¡Esa es una identidad seria y un propósito de peso! Y entiendan esto: la forma en que descubrimos y caminamos en nuestros llamamientos es fijando nuestros ojos en Él, imitando la forma en que Él vivió (1 Juan 2:6).
Así que déjame preguntarte: ¿Estás ayudando a aquellos a quienes estás discipulando a abrazar plenamente quiénes son en Cristo y el hermoso propósito que Él les ha confiado? ¿O siguen buscando, probando diferentes identidades, sintiéndose sin rumbo e insatisfechos? Es nuestro trabajo cooperar con el Espíritu Santo y estar alineados con las Escrituras a medida que los ayudamos a asumir el significado y la expresión completos de ser hijos de Dios y caminar de una manera que le agrade a Él.
Mi Historia
Hace unos años, me quedé completamente exhausto. Ya ni podia andar. Estaba total y completamente agotado. Una de las formas en que Jesús me ayudó a salir de ese charco de desesperación fue memorizando algunas Escrituras sobre mi identidad y propósito y la identidad y el propósito de Dios. Simplemente me saturé, meditando en esos versículos, tomándolos en serio, y eso me sacó de ese hueco de decepción, depresión y desilusión. Tomó algo de tiempo y paciencia amorosa de Deb, pero finalmente, Jesús me ayudó a volver a encarrilarme con mi identidad intacta y un propósito renovado.
Nuestro Plan de Acción
Así que ahora es el momento de poner esto en acción. Aquí hay algunas ideas;
1. Pida a los discípulos que memoricen versículos sobre la soberanía de Dios, su identidad y su propósito
2. Cuando hables de estos dos, combínalos y trata de no separarlos
3. Nunca enfrentes el Saber, el Ser o el Hacer uno contra el otro
Es esencial que nosotros, como hacedores de discípulos, ayudemos a las personas a comprender su identidad y propósito en Cristo. ¡Asegurémonos de tener un plan para ayudarlos a hacer precisamente eso!
