Welcome Back! Today, we’ll be combining the gospels of Luke to how relational networks advance the gospel.

Luke 1.39-56
In those days Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah, where she entered the home of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. And she cried out with a loud voice; “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.”
Then Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For He has looked with favor on the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name. His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones, but has exalted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty-handed. He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy, as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.” Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
My Thoughts
So a key disciple-making lesson comes from verses 39 through 40, as we see the power of the relational network. Elizabeth is Mary’s relative (Luke 1:36), and they’re having miraculous conceptions at the same time.
It’s very interesting that Mary would make the trek from Nazareth to the hill country. Sum eighty miles as the crow flies. It should be noted how much trouble Mary went to in order to just see Elizabeth; that was a long walk. She could have ridden a camel or a donkey, but because it’s possible she was very poor, she probably just walked. It was a several days’ journey, (three or four). This demonstrates Mary’s commitment to people in her relational network. We see God using those kinds of relational bonds over and over again to advance His kingdom. In the New Testament Greek, it’s called Oikos. It means the household or the relational network. It’s not just family but all their friends, family, co-workers, and associates.
Here are several examples from the New Testament of how God used oikos (household) to spread the gospel:
1. Later we will see how John the Baptist, Jesus, and His initial disciples are all connected by relational networks (John 1:35-51).
2. The gospels record instances where Jesus ministered to entire households, such as the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law (Mark 1:29-31).
3. In John 4:53, after the healing of the royal official’s son, it states “he and his whole household believed.”
4. In Acts 10, Cornelius gathered his relatives and close friends (his oikos) when Peter came to share the gospel with them. As a result, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the message.
5. In Acts 16:14-15, after Lydia was converted, she and her household were baptized.
6. In Acts 16:31-34, after the Philippian jailer asked what he must do to be saved, Paul replied “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Paul then spoke the word of the Lord to the jailer and all his household, and they were all baptized.
7. In 1 Corinthians 1:16, Paul mentions baptizing the household of Stephanas.
The New Testament provides clear examples of the gospel spreading rapidly through households and relational networks (oikos), which was a natural method in that cultural context. Evangelizing the oikos allowed the gospel to spread quickly while providing a supportive community for new believers.
My Story
I remember in a two-year time frame, my dad, myself, and my youngest brother all came to Christ. It was all because of our stepmother’s mom. We called her Grandma Marge. She was praying for us. Never underestimate the prayers of a grandmother. I think that’s one of the most powerful weapons on the planet. One after another, our family started following Jesus. The power of the relational network.
Deb and I have watched the gospel pass from one person to another. One day in Starbucks, I led a young woman to Christ. She was baptized and invited us to her house to do Bible study with her brother and her son, who also came to Christ and were baptized. Soon she would invite a half a dozen friends to join the little church we started in her apartment. Another example of the power of the relational network.
Our Action Plan
Now it’s time for application. Here’s some ideas.
- Make a list of all the people in your relational network and have those you are discipling to do the same
- Make a map of how these relationships are connected. (See the video)
- Set a goal to share the gospel with each of these people and routinely debrief with those you are discipling
As we learn to be intentional about sharing the gospel with the people we already know, we should see more people coming into the kingdom of God.

Así que una lección clave para hacer discípulos viene de los versículos 39 al 40, cuando vemos el poder de la red relacional. Isabel es pariente de María (Lucas 1:36), y al mismo tiempo están teniendo concepciones milagrosas.
Es muy interesante que María hiciera el viaje desde Nazaret hasta la región montañosa. Sume ochenta millas en línea recta. Hay que tener en cuenta la cantidad de problemas que se tomó María para ver a Elisabet. Fue un largo camino. Podría haber montado un camello o un burro, pero como es posible que fuera muy pobre, probablemente solo caminaba. Fue un viaje de varios días (tres o cuatro). Nuestro Plan de Acción
Ahora es el momento de la aplicación de este mensaje. Aquí tienes algunas ideas.
1. Haz una lista de todas las personas en tu red relacional y pide a las personas a las que estás discipulando que hagan lo mismo.
2. Haz un mapa de cómo están conectadas estas relaciones. (Ver el video)
3. Fíjate una meta de compartir el Evangelio con cada una de estas personas e informa esto rutinariamente con las personas a las que estás discipulando. A medida que aprendemos a tener la intención de compartir el evangelio con las personas que ya conocemos, deberíamos ver a más personas entrar en el reino de Dios.
