Observations on the Calling of God

I believe that God can call us through a mystical or logical persuasion (Ex 3.1-11, Acts 9.1-9, 1 Tim 3.1-7 Mt 4.19, Mt 10.1-2, Mk 3.13-14, Lk 6.12-13)

I believe the call of God is a preordained sovereign act of His choosing and it cannot be revoked (Rom 11.29)

I believe there is a generic call to follow Jesus and make His disciples on every human on the planet (1 Pet 3.18, 2 Pet 3.9, Mt 4.19, 28.18-20)

I believe the call of God can be resisted and disobeyed (Ex 3.1-11, Jonah 1.1-4)

Forms of God’s Calling

Praying for Our Army Work (Yesterday’s Prayer Warriors: 23/100. 23 people praying, that is our high to date. Let’s keep recruiting to our prayer team. We are looking for 100 people praying daily!)

Pray that men and women from our work will be missionaries all over the world

That God would give us committed laborers for His Kingdom in the Army

Pray for Fort Polk (Staff: Kevin and Shannon Lambert, Jon Spenn)

Answers to prayer: Doug Cote is doing much better and Tina Fajardo is recovering very nicely and has regained 20/20 vision. All Service Directors had their first conference call today and things are looking great for the military mission of the Navigators.

Forms of God’s Calling

Mystical – Moses and the burning bush (Ex 3.1-11), Paul and the blinding light (Acts 9.1-9)

Logical – A man’s Desire to be an overseer (1 Tim 3.1-7), the 12 following Jesus (Mt 4.19, Mt 10.1-2, Mk 3.13-14, Lk 6.12-13)

Combination of Both – Jesus growing into His calling and hearing from God (Lk 2.40, Mt 1.16, Mk 1.10, Lk 3.22, Jn 1.32-33), Paul’s Missionary Journey into Asia Minor (Acts 16.6-10 Paul making decisions and then the HS directing) David being chosen by Samuel the prophet (1 Sam 16.1-13)

Principles in the Calling of God

Pray that we will be used of God to help others realize their great calling in Jesus Christ

Principles in the Calling of God

God’s design for us is from eternity past (Ps 139.13-16, Jer 29.11-13, Eph 2.10)

And yet we are to respond by human will (Eph 4.1, 2 Pet 1.10)

But the calling of God is irrevocable (Rom 11.29)

Following Jesus is a generic calling to all men (1 Pet 3.18, 2 Pet 3.9, Mat 22.14)

Observations from the Call of Timothy

Timothy was recruited by Paul to accompany him on the mission (Act 16.1-3)

Timothy came out of good stock being discipled by his mother and grandmother (2 Tim 1.5)

Throughout Paul’s writings to Timothy he give strong exhortation to fulfill his gifting as a spiritual leader (1 Tim 1.3,18, 4.12,14, 6.20, 2 Tim 1.8-9, 4.5)

Paul assumes that there will be a natural reproduction of Timothy’s calling (2 Tim 2.2)

Although there is certainly a spiritual/mystical component to Timothy’s calling, most of his calling is realized in Paul’s training and exhortation to be an godly effective overseer/elder (esp. in Ephesus)

Besides the example of the 12 and Timothy a key verse for the calling of God to vocational ministry as a natural/logical pursuit is 1 Tim 3.1-7.

Observations on the Calling of the 12

It began with an all night prayer vigil (Lk 6.12)

They were chosen and sent (Mt 10.1-2, Mk 3.13-14, Lk 6.12-13)

They were sent with out resources and earned a living from the gospel (Mt 10.8-10)

They were told they would be severely persecuted and that didn’t happen until after the resurrection which presumes that this was a permanent calling not temporary (Mt 10.16-25)

Peter makes mention that they had left everything (Mk 10.28-31, Lk 18.28-30)

This was certainly a vocational calling and it was logical not mystical

Observations from the Calling of the 12 (Jn 1.35-39)

Begins with the commendation and referral of John the Baptist (Jn 1.35-36)

Two of John’s disciples begin to follow Jesus (Jn 1.37)

Jesus asks, “What are you seeking” a simple question to clarify spiritual desires (Jn 1.38)

The 2 acknowledge Jesus as a spiritual teacher 38

They ask, “Where are you staying?” meaning we’d like to hang out with You 38

He invites them to hang out with Him 39

Spiritually hungry men at the beginning of their journey with Jesus 35-39
